Measure your lawn

Most lawns are a few simple shapes. Add each one, take out the house, the drive and the beds, and get the square footage for the calculator.

How to measure a lawn

  1. Sketch the yard. Break the grass into simple shapes: rectangles for most of it, circles for round areas, triangles for odd corners.
  2. Measure in feet. A long tape or a measuring wheel works for most lawns. For a big lot, the distance tool in an online map gets you close.
  3. Take out what is not grass. Mark the house, drive, patio, pool and planting beds as cut-outs. Fertilizer on them is wasted, and on pavement it washes into storm drains.
  4. Send the total to the calculator. The button above carries your square footage across, so you can go straight to pounds and bags.

The formulas

Rectangle

length × width

50 ft × 100 ft = 5,000 sq ft

Circle

3.1416 × (across ÷ 2)²

20 ft across = 314 sq ft

Triangle

base × height ÷ 2

30 ft × 40 ft ÷ 2 = 600 sq ft
